Teddy Tricks Nikki

I can write this blog post because my friend, Nikki Newbrough, knows I’m laughing WITH her, not AT her. Well, that’s not completely true. I do have to give Nikki a little bit of a hard time after she got tricked by Teddy.

First, I have to say thanks to Nikki. Todd and I were in Des Moines one evening this week, and Nikki was nice enough to let the dogs outside and give them their supper before we got home.

I’ve said it before (and I’m biased), but my dogs are smart. Nikki can now say she fell victim to one of Teddy’s tricks.

When I got back to work this week, I asked Nikki how it went letting the dogs out and feeding them. She said, “Teddy scarfed down his food.” For a minute I thought she meant Cubbie because he never turns down a meal. Teddy, on the other hand, usually circles his food dish and watches Cubbie eat and just sits by his dish for awhile before actually deciding to eat any of it.

While Teddy never seems very interested in his own food, he gets very excited about Cubbie’s food. This is very surprising to me because Cubbie’s is a prescription, allergen free food. Teddy doesn’t need allergen free. I can’t imagine it tastes good without chicken or any other flavoring! Teddy SHOULD have the better tasting food. I believe it’s more about knowing Cubbie has something different, and Teddy wants what Cubbie has. Teddy will sometimes try to go for Cubbie’s food, but as soon as I tell him not to, he walks away.

This is a typical morning and/or night: Cubbie starts eating right away, Teddy watches Cubbie eat, Teddy thinks about eating his food, and Teddy finally eats his food about 10-20 minutes later.

When Nikki fed the dogs for us, she put the food on the ground and Teddy immediately ate Cubbie’s food. Nikki told me she wondered why Cubbie was just staring at her with this sad look on his face as Teddy ate. It’s because Cubbie knew Teddy was eating his food. Cubbie is so mild tempered, he doesn’t get mad or even try to get Teddy to leave his food alone.

I told Nikki Teddy knew he had a rookie feeding them, and this was his chance to eat Cubbie’s food without her knowing. In Nikki’s defense, I should have told her the dish with the bigger chunks of food belongs to Cubbie and the smaller bites are Teddy’s food.

When we got home from Des Moines, both food dishes were empty. I have to assume Cubbie ended up eating Teddy’s food once he realized his was gone. It’s not great for him to eat Teddy’s regular food, but he didn’t seem bothered by it since it was just one, small dish of food.

My favorite part of this story was watching Nikki’s expression as I laughed and told her she got tricked by Teddy.

Teddy pulled a fast one on her, and I bet he was extremely proud of himself!

As another joke, Todd made the comment, “I hope we don’t give her baby the wrong food when we babysit.”

We all had a good laugh at Teddy tricking Nikki, but I think Teddy got the last laugh.
